phil_packerThe Pride of Britain Award, 2009 for Fundraiser of The Year has been awarded to ex-Armed Forces Major, Phil Packer in recognition for his tireless charity fundraising for ‘Help For Heroes’.

Phil has raised £1.2million for the Help For Heroes charity after sustaining serious spinal cord injuries whilst serving in Iraq.

Phil has been inspired by all those he has met along his journey from the disabled community, to medical practitioners, and family and friends. He has now left the Armed Forces to dedicate his life to supporting Young People with Disabilities and he has set up his own charity, ‘The British Inspiration Trust’ (BRIT) to further champion people with disabilities.

The Pride of Britain Awards, in association with the Daily Mirror recognises the unsung heroes and heroines of Britain. It awards inspirational people who have gone beyond their call of duty to help of others, and it is with great honour that Phil accepts his award.

Through sheer strength and determination, Phil has raised money for Help For Heroes through a series of physical challenges. Phil hauled himself 3000ft up El Capitan Mountain in California. Three weeks earlier he walked the London Marathon, and in February 2009 – just one year on since Phil was paralysed – he rowed the English Channel.
