The necessary role that social media plays in spreading the word has yet again been highlighted as The Pope has issued a statement telling his clerics to use “multimedia tools” to spread the gospel.

Benedict XVI said that emailing is not enough in a message released by the Vatican. He is encouraging priests to use the latest “audio visual resources” such as setting up web sites, writing blogs and creating videos.

The pontiff, 82, has opened a You Tube channel and a website. The Pope2You site even features a Facebook application, which lets you send postcards with photos of Benedict and excerpts of speeches to friends.

Whatever next!? The idea of The Pope Tweeting about his tasty Sunday breakfast fills us with joy. His view just goes to show how something as modern as social media is as important for aiding religious groups to have their voice heard and spread the word.
