salesdrop

With album sales dropping for the fifth year in a row in 2009, and free streaming sevices such as Spotify and Last FM (and Apples rumoured iTunes streaming service)  the music industry must look at new ways to engage the customer and create revenue.

When we used to buy an album it was not just for one song but for the whole package, the cover, the other songs, that gave you more of an idea as to what the artist was about and the cover notes that where always a good read.

What can be done to create this type of satisfaction with a download? This is where the album app comes into play, with multiple covers, videos and links to websites and social media platforms all included in your download. Why stop there, remix and mash up culture is seen across all media now so why not allow you customers to remix the track and then make these remixes available for others to buy.

Facebook and i-phone apps will allow this new remix option with downloaded albums, and there are also standalone platforms like  MXP4, at Poker we look forward to seeing what becomes of this new and exciting technology.

pope

The necessary role that social media plays in spreading the word has yet again been highlighted as The Pope has issued a statement telling his clerics to use “multimedia tools” to spread the gospel.

Benedict XVI said that emailing is not enough in a message released by the Vatican. He is encouraging priests to use the latest “audio visual resources” such as setting up web sites, writing blogs and creating videos.

The pontiff, 82, has opened a You Tube channel and a website. The Pope2You site even features a Facebook application, which lets you send postcards with photos of Benedict and excerpts of speeches to friends.

Whatever next!? The idea of The Pope Tweeting about his tasty Sunday breakfast fills us with joy. His view just goes to show how something as modern as social media is as important for aiding religious groups to have their voice heard and spread the word.

As we have been saying for a while now at Poker PR, the world of music and how we listen and purchase is changing.

Spotify and Pandora have changed the way we do this. Now iTunes, leaders in music downloads are rumored to be launching a streaming service to compete in the market.

Azuli Records have enlisted Poker PR’s digital media services to promote their Azuli presents Miami 2010 album.

Our agency will apply a full-scale, targeted mail out for the new album, applying creative ideas for coverage across digital and print media.

It’s a double celebration for Azuli as this album, which notoriously predicts the big tunes to come out of the @Miami Winter Music Conference, is the 10th in its series, and the label itself is celebrating 20 years since its first release in 1990.

There a whopping 7 exclusive releases on this album, due out in March in both download and CD formats (mixed and unmixed), from the likes of @Deadmau5 & @Chris Lake, and @Seamus Haji.

“The CD represents the main styles that’ll happen this year. It’ll be much housier and leaning more to the groovy snares and rolling beats that are around at the moment, rather than the more minimal and chunky electro house grooves of recent years.” David Piccioni, Azuli

soulwax

David and Stephen Dewaele, the brothers behind @Soulwax and @2manydjs, have announced that they will launch a new Radio Soulwax website.

The new site will operate as an online radio station, playing a collection of mixes put together by the pair. David explained to 6music: “We’re making 24 compilations that will rotate. Each hour is themed in a way and they are going to rotate in such a way that you would never hear the same thing twice. We will launch it as an online radio station so people could have it for free.

The ‘As Heard On Radio Soulwax’ series has always been a Poker PR favourite, with ‘Part 2’ being the standout. Any artist who can seamlessly mash up Dolly Parton into Rӧyksopp is a winner in our book. We, for one, shall be tuning in.
